Nursing, Midwifery & AHP Funding

This information outlines the process for funding applications for non-medical continuing professional development.

Funding has been made available for the current financial year, which runs from April 2024 to the end for March 2025.

In order to apply for funding, applicants will need to complete a ‘Study Leave’ form and upload it as evidence of support along with this online application.

Applicants will also need to submit proof of the cost of the course, training or CPD activity.

Applications for funding will be reviewed by the CPD Panel, to ensure approved funds are utilised fairly, ethically & effectively across the trust in line with the trust values, objectives and priorities, aswell as NHSE guidance.

Applications submitted before the end of the calendar month will be considered at the following month’s panel meeting. For example, if you submit your application in July, it will be considered in August. Please bear this time frame in mind when planning your application.

The closing date for final applications for this funding window will be the 31st of January 2025.

Courses should not be booked until confirmation of funding is received. If a course is booked and subsequent funding is not agreed, then the CSU will need to identify funds from their own budget or the individual applicant will need to self-fund the course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for funding?

Funding often comes from different sources, and these may have different eligibility criteria. All applications will be considered by the Education Lead for CPD or by the CPD Panel but funding is not guaranteed to be approved.

Can I claim for expenses such as travel & accommodation?

Funding cannot be used for expenses, so this should be considered when looking at the location of courses or training.

My manager has declined to authorise support for my application. Can I still apply?

Your manager’s support is vital for the funding application process. The panel cannot allocate funding for your choice of course/training if your manager is not able to provide adequate study leave for you to attend. Some courses also require delegated to complete aspects of their course in clinical practice and have a sign off process; so your manager must be able to support this. Our CPD team may be able to offer advice in this situation, so do get in touch via CPDapprovals@bthft.nhs.uk

The training I want to attend is next week. Can my application please be processed today?

Applications will only be considered by the CPD Panel at their monthly meeting. So applications must be submitted in a timely manner which allows not only for the panel to consider whether funding can be authorised, but for payment to be made to the training provider.

Can I pay for my training myself and claim the money back?

Reimbursements will only be made in exceptional circumstances. Applicants must wait until confirmation of funding is received. If a course is booked and subsequent funding is not agreed, then the CSU will need to identify funds from their own budget or the individual applicant will need to self-fund the course.

How much funding am I entitled to?

All applications will be considered on an individual basis by the CPD panel.

Can I choose where I do a course/training?

Not all training providers are set up with the NHS’s payment system, which can cause long delays or in some cases prevent payment being made. But you can email CPDapprovals@bthft.nhs.uk if you would like more information. The panel may recommend a different training provider who deliver an identical or comparable course and are already set up on our system.

Can I apply for more than one course?

All applications will be considered on an individual basis by the CPD panel. Separate courses must be requested on separate application forms, and have separate study leave forms signed by your manager.
