The Purpose
Work experience helps people prepare for professional study and their future career. It allows those on placement to see what the job and working in the NHS is really like, understand the demands of the career and find out if it is suited to them.
Work experience give the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the values, attitudes and behaviours necessary to work in the NHS.
At BTHFT, you will have the chance to shadow professionals in either Clinical or Non-Clinical roles. Choosing Work Experience will enable experiences such as:
- Help to make beds
- Distribute ward leaflets or information to new patients
- Help patient orientation in the ward
- Shadow a nurse or healthcare assistant as they take and record a patientβs blood pressure, temperature and heart rate and completing fluid charts under direct supervision
- General tidying of patient area
- Observe consultations
- Observe routine procedures or investigations or minor surgical procedures
- Assist with meals (preparing over-tables, cutting food, encouraging the patient to eat and drink) and patient feeding
- Deliver and collect items from other departments
- Talk to the patients
- Escort patients
- Attend team meetings
- You might survey patients in a ward to find out what leads to a positive experience.
- Review communication materials such as the pages of the website making suggestions for improvement.
- Update leaflets or noticeboards.
- Observe education and training of staff.
- Analysing calls to see which issues generate complaints.
- Completion of a project during the placement.
- Attend team meetings

Who is it for?
- To be eligible for work experience you must be in formal education and training and living and/or studying in the Bradford District.
- To complete clinical work experience you must be over the age of 16.
- To complete non-clinical work experience you must be over the age of 15.
If you are not eligible, as you are not in formal education, you may be interested in volunteering opportunities at BTHFT instead.
